Starting a business? Start here!

The Business Model Canvas is a useful tool for figuring out what you need to start a successful, sustainable business. This template will give you the tools you need to create one with ease.

This template was created so that all that you need to put together a thorough Business Model Canvas (BMC) can be found in one table. It also has an accompanying page designer app that will allow you to easily export your formatted canvases. There are a few main advantages to using Airtable to create your BMC:

  • It's formatted for you: all you need to do is add content and print.
  • All of your data can be tracked in one table: there are formatting and linking advantages to having all of your data in one table, such as making it easier to format linked records into bullet-pointed lists.
  • It's totally customizable: you can change anything you want about this canvas, the colors, the way it is organized on the page, the prompts under the headings, etc.
  • It comes with instructions: there are prompts and instructions built into this template to make it as intuitive to use as possible.
  • You can easily create alternative versions of your canvas: when working on a BMC, you will often create iterations or alternative versions are your vision evolves.

This template is set up with an example in place which explores whether a "for profit" or "non-profit" bike shop is feasible. You can easily have records that are shared between the two BMCs but they can also have records unique to them. For example, the "for profit" and "non profit" bike shop both need space to work in but the "non-profit" will most likely also require fundraising to remain viable, which isn't true of the "for profit". This means that they would share the "bike shop/commercial space" record (under Key Resources), but they would not share the "Public Funding/Grants" record (under Cost Structures).
