As a now retired caregiver, I have firsthand experience combatting the havoc wreaked upon communities of color by the terrorism of public health inequity. COVID-19 is a painful reminder of this inequity, as well as how ill-prepared we are as a nation to respond to the trauma of losing 600,000 souls and counting, as death and grief are generally regarded as topics too visceral for the daily exchange.

So while we collectively and rightfully mourn these individuals, sympathize with their families that now face an extremely difficult road ahead as they navigate the grieving process, and stand in solidarity to fight against precious lives being cut far too short by the unrelenting pandemic of hate and neglect, we simultaneously dismiss the urgency of confronting our significant discomfort with discussing death and grief in our own families with those we love the most.

This base includes an elder care 101 crib sheet and senior housing overview, as well as a personal account of my own caregiving journey and navigation of end-of-life support and advocacy for my father. Each resource is replete with links to more information and practical, accessible guidance. More resources to come!
