Bag Factory Auction
Between 10and5 is Hosting an Instagram Auction to Help Support the Bag Factory This year, the Bag Factory celebrates its 30th anniversary - a momentous achievement as one of the few remaining community arts organisations established during apartheid that continues to operate and thrive to this day. In 2020, in the middle of the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic, the Bag Factory took a huge step towards securing its future by purchasing the building it has called home for three decades. Though ideal in many respects (size, capacity, locality), the Bag Factory building is in a poor state of disrepair and is in urgent need of attention for it to be fit for purpose in the long term. In the short term, an immediate threat to the Bag Factory’s operations and creative programming is its roof, which leaks badly throughout. During the cyclone Eloise storms, which hit parts of South Africa in February 2021, the Bag Factory’s office, gallery, and some studios were completely flooded. After serious water damage, this artistic organisation urgently needs to carry out essential roof repairs to ensure that they can continue to fulfil their core vision, mission, and programme activities. The Bag Factory has therefore called on the community to help restore it to its by donating an original/existing piece of work that will be auctioned on Instagram.
