Subverting Heteronormativity: An Intervention to Foster Positive Attitudes Toward Homosexuality Among Indian College Students
Study took place before 2018 repeal of Section 377
The present study was an attempt to design and test the efficacy of a three-component intervention to foster more positive attitudes towards gays and lesbians among a young urban Indian sample.
Experimental
The experimental group (n=60) received a three-component module including perspective-taking activity, education, and direct contact with gay and lesbian persons. Attitudes towards homosexuals, empathy, and self-esteem were measured using standardized questionnaires fifteen days before the intervention and immediately following the intervention. No intervention was carried out with the control group (n=55). Their attitudes were measured fifteen days apart, parallel to the experimental group

This article explores the role of heteronormativity in shaping LGBTQ+ identifying young people’s experiences of sexuality and sexual health in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We use the framework of heteronormative straightening devices to identify ‘invisible’ structures upholding normative sexual behaviours and see how young people in Bangladesh navigate these in their everyday lives. In particular, we ask: (1) What are the main heteronormative ‘straightening devices’ encountered by LGBTQ + young people? (2) How do LGBTQ + young people experience and navigate these straightening devices in their everyday lives? (3) What are the common health consequences of confronting these straightening devices?

This study aims to identify latent classes of childhood maltreatment, and to test associations between class membership and sexually violent behavior during the first 12 months of university in a sample of Vietnamese men.
Experimental
Randomized controlled trial of GlobalConsent, a six-module online sexual-violence prevention program. Participants (N = 793) completed a baseline survey, were randomized 1:1 to GlobalConsent or attention control, and were invited to complete post-test surveys at six-months post-baseline and 12-months postbaseline. Validated scales were employed to assess childhood maltreatment and past-six-month sexually violent behavior at each post-test.

Direct contact was achieved through a transgender speaker panel and indirect contact involved a video presentation. In total, 159 students enrolled in undergraduate courses at a prominent university in India were enlisted for this study. Perceptions regarding transgenders were measured using the genderism and transphobia scale. Perceptions were measured at three different time points–before the contact, immediately after the contact, and one-month post-contact.
