Here at EMPRESS, every single piece is carefully mixed, rolled, cut, baked, drilled, sanded, assembled, photographed and packaged with my heart, soul and bare hands. No machines, just me. All earring pairs use hypoallergenic stainless steel posts, and are made with polymer clay. While cured polymer clay is deceivingly light and pretty durable, I still consider them fragile. Kēhaulani Nielson is a Native Hawaiian designer, artist, hula practitioner, and businesswoman. At the helm of Kahulale’a, the company she founded in 2013, her company has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the Hawaii fashion scene. Her designs have graced the runways of the MAMo Fashion Show and Hawaii Fashion Showcase and her products have been sold in high end resort boutiques throughout Hawaii, the mainland United States, Tahiti and Japan. Most notably, her products were selected as one of the few “Made In Hawaii” products to be sold in Disney Resort Boutiques in Hawaii and Florida. In 2017, she opened a small showroom in the heart of Honolulu in the hopes of expanding her business further. Two years later, in the Fall of 2019, she opened her first retail location at Ala Moana Shopping Center, the largest open air shopping center in the world. Her company Kahulale’a features beautiful clothing with original artwork that celebrates Hawaii and it’s people, and Kēhaulani draws on her 30 plus years as a Hula practitioner for inspiration. Established in 2013, Lahaʻole Designs (meaning rare, choice, unique) started when Tanya was on maternity leave with her fourth child. Wanting to create Christmas gifts for her nieces, she took a metal soldering class at a local jewelry store. From there, she experimented with wire wrapping and manipulating metals to manifest shapes she dreamt of creating. Among the vast sea of talented jewelry makers and designers, Tanya wanted to stand out by forging pieces that were unique, meaningful, and highlighted Native Hawaiian culture.

Lehuauakea is a māhū Native Hawaiian interdisciplinary artist and kapa maker from Pāpaʻikou on Moku O Keawe, the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Lehua’s Kānaka Maoli family descends from several lineages connected to Maui, Kauaʻi, Moku O Keawe where their family resides to this day. Through a range of traditional Kanaka Maoli craft-based media, their art serves as a means of exploring social and biological ecologies, cultural and environmental resilience, and Indigenous identity. With a particular focus on the labor-intensive making of kapa (bark cloth), ʻohe kāpala (carved bamboo printing tools), and natural pigments, Lehua is able to breathe new life into patterns and traditions practiced for generations. Through these acts of resilience that help forge deeper relationships with ʻāina, this mode of Indigenous storytelling is carried well into the future.

‘Ono + ‘Awa Keiki was inspired by the beauty of Hawai’i and all its keiki. We know that every Keiki has a little ‘ONO (sweet) + ‘AWA (sour) in them, and growing up in such a beautiful place is nothing short of a blessing. We started O + A with a few fun designs inspired by all things mea Hawai’i. This quickly turned into a collection of Mea Wahī’eha (Hawaiian style band aids) and so much more!

It all began when we had a craving for some Lihing Mui Lemon Peel Candy, a favorite amongst Hawaii Locals, so we decided to whip up a batch.
