EVENT DESCRIPTION: Diwa ng Kasarinlan is an annual festival that aims to bring together the Filipino community across the Greater Toronto Area for the purpose of celebrating the Philippine struggle for independence through awareness of our history. On July 7th we commemorate the founding of the Katipunan, the revolutionaries who fought against the Spanish colonial occupation in the Philippines. Filipinos today continue their struggle for national liberation and genuine democracy by speaking out against the human rights abuses and lack of basic social services, and by calling for the rights and welfare of our people both in the Philippines and abroad. Throughout history, we observe that resistance against struggle can be fought in many ways. One of them is through art. Art is a tool of resistance, we use it to communicate ideas and engage the people into thinking about the world critically. Art should be accessible, and serve the interests of the people to advance social change. Through these series of free mural painting workshops, participants will learn from facilitators: artists Bert Monterona and Mylene Maranoc, on the basics of art fundamentals, and how to promote peace and unity in a diverse community through art. By attending these workshops, you will gain basic draftsmanship of visual arts, and knowledge on how to create art through collective educational discussions and understanding. Participants at any skill level are welcomed to join!
