It will take place at Newport’s Tredegar House Folk Festival on the weekend of May 5-7, 2023. It should be a stunning piece of musical and dance art. Alaw will create a bespoke arrangement of the Welsh song Pan O’wn y Gwanwyn. Besides their more usual fiddles and guitar they will incorporate an Indian harmonium (a small keyboard that is at the heart of so much Indian music and will now add its textures to Welsh folk). India Dance Wales, for their part, will choreograph a bespoke dance to the music.

Brecon Baroque Festival is seeking funding for two strands of work. Strand 1 involves young people now playing instruments in Powys through South Powys Youth Music (SPYM), and in Cardiff through Making Music Changing Lives (MMCL) as well as students and recent graduates of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD). All participants will rehearse and perform alongside Brecon Baroque’s professional musicians under Rachel Podger’s directorship. The performing ensemble, Brecon Baroque Festival Orchestra (BBFO), will perform at the Festival’s Finale Concert. Strand 2 consists of interactive workshops for children who are not particularly engaged with music, visiting schools within a 5-mile radius of Brecon, including Brecon High School, Ysgol y Bannau (Welsh language school) and Penmaes School for SEN learners. RWCMD students will be mentored in leading these, enabling them to create workshop programmes and strategies prepared with tutors, and delivered with the support and oversight of Festival management.
