Open Philanthropy - University Group Funding

Use this form to apply to Open Philanthropy's university group funding program. See our program page for more details: https://www.openphilanthropy.org/open-philanthropy-university-group-funding/ We recommend that applicants aim to spend less than an hour filling this out. (This doesn't include time spent planning and thinking about how to make your group go well-- that could be worth much more than an hour of your time.) We think it's generally unlikely that spending a long time on this application will substantively affect the chance that you receive funding. By default, we will share your application with Open Philanthropy staff as well as a select number of external advisors. If there's any information that you'd like to keep confidential to Open Philanthropy staff, please share it in the relevant form field below. When sharing Google Docs or Sheets, please grant comment access to cb-funding@openphilanthropy.org to facilitate efficient follow-up communication. If you have any questions about this application, you can email us at uniorganizerfellowship@openphilanthropy.org.

What are you seeking funding for?
Please select all that apply.
  • Group expenses (e.g. event materials, food, etc.)
  • Personal organizing time (if you're a graduate student)
Group university
What university is the group at? If you can't find the university in this list, select "Other". If you are only applying for funding for personal organizing and there is not a specific university that you plan to organize at, select "N/A".
Description of group activities
Please provide a brief description of the group's purpose and specific intended activities. (No more than 1 - 2 paragraphs).

By “engaged members”, we mean something like, “is currently participating in a club reading group/fellowship/project or engages with the club at least once every two weeks”.
(optional) Additional details on the number of engaged members

Please list the name and email of the group leader(s).
If you are the only leader of this group, write "N/A".

Previous funding (if applicable)
Have you or your group previously been funded within the past two years? Please list any previous funding sources here, and the group(s) that were funded.

Other funding applications (if applicable)
If you have recently applied or are planning to apply for other funding sources, please list them here.

(Optional) References
Please list the name and contact information of any references who could speak to your abilities as a university group organizer or provide context on the group's activities and impact. References are optional, but can improve your chances of receiving funding and speed-up our evaluation process.

Time-sensitivity
Generally speaking, we aim to review proposals within 6 weeks of receiving them, although this may not prove possible for all applications, and is dependent on your timely reply to requests for follow-up information. Do you need a decision within less than six weeks?
(This information will be kept confidential and is solely for the purpose of expediting the grant disbursement process.)
Are you in the United States on a visa?
Have you previously applied for funding from Open Philanthropy?
If so, please select the outcome of your most recent application.
If I receive funding, I’ll review the section on Community Health and Member Wellbeing from CEA’s EA Groups Resource Centre.
Link: https://resources.eagroups.org/ (We expect this content to be helpful for all university groups that are in scope for our University Organizer Fellowship, not just effective altruism groups.)
If I receive funding for a residential event (i.e., one where participants stay overnight), I’ll read the below CEA document on Advice about Community Health at EA Retreats and will make sure that there’ll be a code of conduct for the event that covers sexual misconduct and is brought to the participants’ attention and includes information on whom participants can contact if there is a problem.
(Optional) Anything else you want to share with us?

(Optional) Confidential information
By default, we will share your application with Open Philanthropy staff as well as a select number of external advisors. If there's any information that you'd like to keep confidential to Open Philanthropy staff, share it here.
