Georgia Tech has tons of talented students who could use their careers to do tons of good. Our vision is for EA at Georgia Tech is to shift the culture such that ambitious, smart, altruistic students feel like pursuing careers addressing major global issues is an exciting, achievable option for them. To do this, we'll need to grow a lot, so your help is really useful! By the way, 80,000 Hours, Open Philanthropy, and the Centre for Effective Altruism think running EA student groups is often the most impactful thing people can do in college for this reason! It should only take a minute to fill out this form. *Note: If you'd like to help organize activities but donβt have time because you need money from a part-time job, you can apply to the Open Philanthropy University Organizer Fellowship for funding! Here are some of the things we do: - EA Intro Seminar Help teach and explore EA. Facilitate a program, help redesign the syllabus and application, plan special programming for fellows, etc. - Post-Intro Programs Dive deeper with core members. Run an in-depth fellowship, start a reading group about a specific cause area like AI safety or animal welfare, or help match members with projects, internships, and career opportunities, etc. - Retreats Other EA groups have found retreats to extremely valuable for helping people to reflect and reevaluate their plans for maximizing their impact (see also https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/oYbQcobBA9dZ8qKSK/) - One-on-one chats Chat with members to help them explore EA ideas and opportunities to do the most good (similar to https://eaguides.org/) - Marketing/Outreach Get everyone at Georgia Tech to hear about EA and our opportunities. Send emails to listservs, design posters, table, collab with other clubs, run social media accounts, etc. - Events Host guest speakers, run discussion events, social events, career planning events, coworking events, etc. - Operations/Other There are many tasks behind the scenes that need to be done! For example, writing our mailing list or reposting opportunities to the EA @ GT Slack Applicants should: β’ Have a good understanding of key EA topics, equivalent to weeks 1β6 of the Introductory EA Intro Seminar (https://eagatech.org/intro-seminar) β’ Care about EA, social impact, and promoting well-being over the long term β’ Be able to complete tasks reliably and let others know if they aren't able to complete tasks in time β’ Be responsive to messages on Slack β’ Be excited about learning even more about EA and engaging further with EA content Perks you'll get if you join the board: β’ A leadership position which you can write about on your LinkedIn or resume β’ Fun organizer-exclusive social events β’ Freedom to take on any initiatives you'd like β’ A warm glow in your heart as you make an impact After you submit your application, we'll reach out to you within one week to schedule an interview.
