Adoption Application

The goal of this form is to support a future conversation between you and our adoption team, where they aim to identify and help with anything that might prevent our rats living a good life, such as possible risks, gaps in care knowledge, and unsuitable cages. We are happy to take the time to provide education, resources and support, but for anything you've got covered please take this form as an opportunity to give us a really clear picture of your situation, knowledge and experience so that we're not going over things you already know or have. This will make the process go much faster and reduce back-and-forth and follow up questions. If you haven't adopted from us in recent years, please fill out this form and someone from the adoptions team will email you! If you're a frequent flyer please feel free to email adoptions@rachiesratirementhome.com directly with some current cage pics, and tell us about your rats at home and what you're looking for in an adoption. If you need assistance with the form, please email adoptions@rachiesratirementhome.com and let us know how we can help.

Tick all that apply to you.
You won't be automatically rejected based on your answers, it's about knowing what things we need to ask you about when we chat, so we can find solutions for potential barriers to adoption.
  • I have permission to own rats where I live
  • I can come to the rescue to adopt, with my rats
  • Nobody in my household has a history of animal abuse/neglect
  • I am over 18
  • I will not be involving these rats in breeding
  • I don't keep my rats outside
  • I don't let my rats play/interact with other species of animals
Would you like to access any of the following services while you're at the rescue?
The rescue operates on a 'pay what you can' basis for many things, where those in need can still access help thanks to the generosity of those who are in a position to donate and pay it forward. Item availability varies with donations/surrenders.
  • Buy a secondhand carrier or travel cage ($0-$20)
  • Buy a cage and setup secondhand ($80+)
  • Buy secondhand equipment (cost varies)
  • Parasite treat my rats with Ivomec (no cost)
  • Health check my rats (no cost)
  • Take a bag of free rat food (no cost)
  • Talk to someone about fostering opportunities
  • Talk to someone about volunteering/helping opportunities
  • Talk to someone about supporting our work with financial or other donations
Are you planning to stop owning rats soon?
We offer companion fostering for people who would like to stop owning rats but don't want their last rat to spent their final days alone. If fostering a pair of elderly rats until your rat passes away would be a better option, contact our foster coordinator instead at rachiesratirementhome.com/fostering
How would you describe your rat owning experience?
Our process is to have a conversation and work together to identify and help remove any barriers to rats having a great life, so an honest answer here just helps us find a starting point.
Any kids in the household? What age?
Kids are totally fine, but no matter how reliable and responsible, parents need to have an active role in learning and caring so they can pick up on things like illness that kids can't be expected to be relied on for. This also helps us choose the right, and least reactive, rats (better safe than assuming kids or rats will behave perfectly) and chat to new/curious owners about whether rats will be what they imagine.

Any other pets/hazards we might need to work around?
Having other pets is totally fine so long as we know how to keep everyone safe. Rats may kill free roaming birds, mice and guinea pigs, eat pet insects and yeet the floating plants out of your fish tank. High prey drive dogs and cats may be a good reason to choose specific cage styles, and snakes may cause terror in some rats due to their smell if housed nearby or recently held.
  • {name}
Would you commit to keeping your rats indoors, and keeping smelly/smoky things out of your rats' shared airspace?
This includes cigarettes, cigars, vaping/e-cigarettes and drugs, incense, aerosol scent or pest control dispensers, scented candles and essential oils, including diffusers. You would be fine to use another room with good ventilation and the door to the rat area closed!
  • {name}
Do you agree that rats must always live in groups of 2+ at minimum, ideally 3+?
This is a must, wherever you go. If you're ever in the situation where you're down to one rat and aren't getting more, contact us and we'll sort something out, like a foster buddy.

What are you looking for in rats? What's important to you? How many are you looking to adopt, and what sex?
Boys? Girls? How many? First time pets? Cuddly? Excited to teach tricks? Are you wanting to bring them to rat shows? Do you have any worries about anything, such as bad experiences in the past, or a complex rat social structure at home that needs the right fit and intros? Whatever is on your mind, let me know what brings you here and what you need. If there is a specific rat you are interested in, let us know!

In addition to the healthy and adoption-ready rats, I would like to be introduced to rats that:
  • Have ongoing, stable health conditions to manage
  • Are in bonded pairs, trios or groups
  • Need trust to be build up before they can enjoy handling
  • Are elderly (approaching or over 2 years old)
  • Require experienced owners to understand and respect their boundaries
  • Need future surgeries/procedures (one-off or ongoing)
  • Don't really want interaction, just a stable home to nap in
If you already have rats, tell us about them!
Sex and age are important to picking the right friends, and we want to know how many rats you have at home already. Personality, where they came from, who lives with who and why, many things can help us find the best fit.

What food are you planning to use for their main diet?
This isn't a test, if you're not sure and you need some help deciding, that's totally okay. The easiest decent food to get is Vetafarm Rodent Origins, keeping it in the cage 24/7, with some daily fresh veg, but there are plenty of good alternatives and some crap ones.

How confident around you about the medical side of rat care, including end of life care? Is there anything we can help you with?
Respiratory infections, tumours, and hormonal aggression are three of the most common medical issues. Rats more often than not need medical assistance passing when end of life comes, as quality of life may be gone weeks before death would occur on its own. It is important to have a good idea of where to look for advice and information, and know which vets near you will see rats and with what experience.

Is your cage ready to go? What do you need from us to get it ready?
We can't adopt out until a cage is ready, and seeing good pictures of the cage and contents is a vital. If your cage isn't ready yet we would be happy to help - let us know what you need (we often have cages for sale, and almost always have cage accessories available for free or "pay-what-you-like"). If you don't have pictures now, you can email follow-up pictures to adoptions@rachiesratirementhome.com titled "[Your Name] - Cage Pictures".

Cage pictures
Pictures should clearly show cage size, scale and contents, the more info we have, the easier it is to approve. To combat people using photos off the internet, please include yourself giving a 'thumbs up' in one of the photos. We will work with you to make any changes necessary!

Submission Declaration
By submitting this application I acknowledge that I have read and agree to all of the following: I am seeking to adopt rats from Rachie’s Ratirement Home, and take full responsibility for their welfare, including medical care if needed. I am over 18. I will not adopt until I have discussed the health, temperament and condition of the animals with a volunteer of Rachie’s Ratirement Home and I am happy with all aspects. I am aware that Rachie’s Ratirement Home is happy to take the rats back should any problems arise, including biting with intent to harm, which I understand is not an expected behaviour, and I will contact them if any troubling events or behaviours occur that I need help with. I agree to maintain the standard of care that has been outlined by the rescue. In the event that I can or will no longer care for my rats at the agreed standard or adhere to the agreements outlined in this form, I agree to seek support from the Rachie’s Ratirement Home to either meet their care needs, rehome them directly, or return them to the rescue. I agree to never use these rats for breeding purposes and will do everything in my power to prevent pregnancy. The rats will not be used for food. I recognise that these are rescue rats with an unknown genetic and medical history. I understand that like all rats they are susceptible to health problems, especially respiratory illnesses. I agree that Rachie’s Ratirement Home holds no responsibility for the actions of the rats after adoption and that Rachie’s Ratirement Home has done their best to screen the rats to adopt out animals with all relevant information made available for you to make an informed choice. If for any reason I am unhappy with my experience adopting, I will contact Rachie’s Ratirement Home, who will try to resolve any issues. For the purposes of all electronic form submission, any document received at an electronic address will be taken to be signed and authorised by the author.
