Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the Museum of Durham History as we provide programs and experiences to Durham residents and visitors. Our commitment to volunteers is to provide meaningful volunteer experience and effective direction in an environment that is friendly, comfortable, educational, and fun.
DSPF is eager for volunteers to help with a new series of events we are calling DPSFest! Specifically we need help with a street festival we have scheduled for March 12th. Tentatively called "FestiFull", we need helping organizing the event as well as with volunteers on the ground on the 11th and the 12th. Volunteers can help virtually with phone calls and arrangements as well as at FestiFull in early March. This event will take place in Durham Central Park. Fundraising for the event supports the Durham Promise Scholarship Fund.

Eyes Ears Nose and Paws
Dog Brood Caregiver and Whelp Home
Brood Caregivers are volunteers who house a breeding female (a "brood") through at least one reproductive cycle.
A reproductive cycle can include:
3-12 months before she goes into season (also known as in estrus or heat);
around two weeks of estrus during which she is bred;
two months of gestation;
8 weeks of litter rearing; and
several weeks of post-weaning recovery.
It is an exciting, fun, and rewarding time, and it is also intense!
When puppies are born, it is called a “whelp,” and we use the term “whelp home” to describe the home that hosts the brood during her pregnancy, when she has the puppies, and during the rearing of the puppies.
Litters average 7-8 puppies, but can be bigger or smaller. Puppies stay at the whelp home for between 5 and 8 weeks - they may transition into our ABEL program at 6 weeks, or they may stay in the home, depending on availability in the ABEL program.
After the dam is recovered, we may transition her back into our ABEL program for a period of time to get extra training before returning to the brood caregiver home.

Activate Good
Triangle Cause Wiki Researcher
About Activate Good
We believe we all have a responsibility to work towards a better world. That’s why Activate Good’s mission is to improve our community through people-powered projects for good. We envision a world in which all people realize and act on their power to improve their communities.
What’s the Cause Wiki?
The Activate Good Cause Wiki is Activate Good’s collaborative community project to build a central information hub about issues local to the Triangle, and connect folks to ways to take action.
Why the Cause Wiki?
We can’t solve problems unless we understand what they are. In anticipation of the impacts of COVID-19, we spoke with several of our Community Partners in April 2020. A major theme amongst responses was concern over the level of community understanding for their causes. The Triangle Cause Wiki will serve as a critical learning resource as we seek to educate and empower the community in post-pandemic recovery and resiliency efforts.
What you’ll do:
- Pick a cause area you’re passionate about!
- Look for fact-based, objective studies or data published by nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities, government agencies, or other reputable sources, and collect trustworthy information about the issue.
- Write an article citing these sources to share with the community (article template to be provided upon approved application)

Jump Ahead
Core Team, Website development
The Jump Ahead team is seeking volunteers with website development experience for the new year. Jump Ahead is a grant-funded UNC student venture that runs an after-school program to engage local youth in physical activity and healthy eating. The program includes weekly jump rope and snack activities, which we have been converting to a new website.
Our existing website was initially written by a team from the Spring 2020 COMP 523 class and followed-up by a team from UNC CS Summer of Code program. The groups used django (python framework) to build out the site and heroku to deploy/host. They also used postgre sql for the content database. The Jump Ahead website will have several user subscription levels for individual students, families, and schools to purchase accounts. It will include progressional modules for students to complete each week with guided lessons on jump rope, healthy recipe preparation, and general program surveys.
The objective of Carolina Closet is to bridge a gap in the accessibility to resources, specifically business attire, to students and faculty at UNC through the acquisition and distribution of donated professional apparel. This organization seeks to deconstruct barriers to professionalism resulting from wealth disparities that may inhibit the pursuit of professional opportunities. We aim to ensure that the candidate for whatever job or position is favored because of their merit, and not because the professional attire they can or cannot afford. Our goal is to provide a small hand in the financial struggle that goes with securing a job be it during or after college. Students spend the duration of their time at university focused on building the best resume for their desired career path, and at Carolina Closet, we believe that the last thing they should have to worry about is lacking the means to acquire suitable interview clothing.
