Natural burials are what Mount Auburn refers to as ‘single-depth’ burials, which means there’ll be only one person per grave space with approximately 3.5′ of soil between the body and the top of the ground where turf or some other type of ground cover will be growing. Mount Auburn’s natural burial graves allow for the use of cloth shrouds, wicker or bamboo caskets, papier mache pods, simple pine caskets, and other containers made of natural materials.

Non-residents who had been in a nursing home outside of Cambridge are allowed if they had been a Cambridge resident immediately prior to moving to the nursing home.
This cemetery will be finalizing a master plan by fall 2024 which will allow more space for non-traditional burial, beautify the cemetery to make it more park-like, and upgrade the search capacity for graves.
Jim indicated that the Cemetery has at least 5 years left for new burials.
