I have not been successful in finding my late father's birth document. The earliest documentation I have is a 1912 Liverpool to Quebec ship's manifest where he is listed as 5 year old Gitzel Zimmerman. While his two older brothers, Moszko Chaskel Cimerman and Srul Cimerman were born in 1898 and 1904, both in Bilgoraj, Lubelskie, Poland, my father's Canadian citizenship papers as well as his 1940 National Registration card, under the name Hyman Zimmerman, state that he was born in Volodymyr-Voly
Out of the four immediate family branches I have not been able to find anything at all on the Zimmerman side in Volyn. I'm hoping this site will help in my research and hopefully find some relatives. As of now, we are pretty sure the family came from Zaslav. At some point there was a name 'change' between 2 brothers. One brother (Abraham/Avraham) either stayed or remained Horen (possibly Horenstein) and Jacob(Yaakov- or maybe his kids) changed the name to Orenstein. My grandfather Moisej Shtejnbuk Mironovich was born in 1904 in Zhitomir. He had a sister Rose Bookstein. He married my grandmother Fani Zimson (Simsohn) in Leningrad. My mother was born there. They where living at Kirovskiy prospekt 26/28 apt. 119. He died in March of 1942 during the siege of Leningrad. He was buried at Serafimovskoye graveyard.
