In 1883 J. D. Blackwell Smith deeded property for the one room Bethel School about four miles north of Warrenton. For the school year, 1896-97, Mr. C. Alexander is listed as the teacher at Bethel. The school was erected around 1916 on the one-acre parcel. The double doors opened out with a six by 15 platform having an alcove on each side serving as a cloak room. The school lot had flowers and shrubbery including a boxwood. Drinking water was secured from a deep well on the property. Student

The trustees of the Public Free School in the Marshall School District: William C. Marshall, A. J. Parr and William F. Turner received .467 (1/2a) of land for the Ashville school on February 13, 1876 from Jacob & Sarah Douglas. At least two schools were built on this property. The first school, known in the community as the little red schoolhouse burned in 1920; the last teacher in this facility was M. B. Cooke.
