Modified SCA Cupping Protocol
Tasting batch-brewed coffee is, in many cases, a better alternative to cupping when you want to avoid cross-contamination. In cases where the coffee-grading function of the SCA cupping protocol is important, we encourage the use of the modified protocol. In response to COVID-19, the SCA modified cupping protocol for use in the Specialty Coffee Expo Cupping Exchange with input from cupping experts and institutions. They anticipate the evolution of this protocol as they continue to collaborate with health and sensory experts and receive feedback from our community.

Forbes has reported on a new pre-print (and pre-peer reviewed) study that has tested and reported on how long the novel coronavirus (HCoV-19 (SARS-2)) causing COVID-19 lives on surfaces. It indicates it can survive for days on plastic and stainless steel and up to a full day on cardboard surfaces.

Food Safety and Coronavirus: A Comprehensive Guide
Even so, plenty of folks—myself included—have been confused or curious about the safety of allowing restaurants to continue preparing and serving food. Is it actually safe? Should I reheat the food when I get it home? Is it better to support local businesses by ordering food, or am I only putting workers and delivery people at risk? And if I’m cooking my own food, what guidelines should I follow?

Protocolo Covid-19 Para Caficultores

SALAM DAMAI... Support Baristas, Café Staff, and Burundi Farmers with JNP Coffee
From now through April 30, 2020 (while supplies last), JNP Coffee will donate 5% of the purchase price on contracts of 10 bags or more to the Virtual Tip Jar (VTJ) of your choice. In the space of a week – which already seems like months – our world has gotten a lot smaller. We feel the need, especially at this unimaginably difficult time, to find ways to support those who help make our coffee industry successful. JNP Coffee is ready to do our part. We’ve developed a program that will provide some financial relief to the baristas and café staff who prepare and serve our coffee. As the demand for online coffee sales grows and cafés are temporarily closed, you can use the power of your coffee purchases to help baristas and café staff suddenly facing under-employment or unemployment. Here’s how it works: JNP Coffee will redirect a portion (5%) of your purchase price for micro-lots from the current harvest to support baristas and café staff through VTJs. Choose a VTJ from the list on Sprudge (https://sprudge.com/support-local-coffee-shops-and-staff-by-filling-their-virtual-tip-jars-161417.html) or request that your favorite cafe have their VTJ added to this published list. The micro-lots for this special program are produced by farmers of the IWCA Burundi Chapter, other women's groups, as well as farmers in our Dushime™ program. All farmers have already received their premiums from JNP Coffee for these sweet, delicious Burundian coffees. You can make your purchase count for baristas and café staff. The potential value generated by this program for Virtual Tip Jars is more than $12,000. To order, call us at +1 (858) 518-7437 or email us at jeanine@jnpcoffee.com.

Washington Emergency Barista Relief Fund
This online fundraising campaign is a collaboration between Coffee at Large and The Chain Collaborative, who are both committed to serving coffee workers at every step of the coffee value chain. Together, Coffee at Large and The Chain Collaborative aim to meet a $17,000 fundraising goal, allowing each barista who has signed up under Washington State on tipjardatabase.coffee to receive $100 toward living expenses. We expect the sign-up list to grow, so we will increase our goal accordingly. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the law. We are also looking for matching individual and business sponsors, so that tips can go twice as far. Consumers remain confused, crave confidence and don’t yet think they are at risk – The Heart of the Matter. Current US Public Opinion and Implications (as of week 16 March 2020)
In this time of great uncertainty, it would be a mistake to rely on assumptions or what we think we know about consumers. So, over the past several weeks we have been monitoring public opinion on COVID-19 to explore how this may affect business verticals and organizations. Although American attitudes are changing daily and in unpredictable ways, we are seeing that behaviors are slow to adapt to the situation. Consumers feel confused and crave information, conventional assumptions about how humans act in this crisis are wrong, and despite all the warnings this virus is not yet personal for people. Below we offer the first summary of the heart of the matter.

A Virtual Meeting held Monday-Friday to better support our fellows in coffee
The RNY Lab has been a place where people can come and share ideas, gain support and feel generally more connected to the greater coffee industry, and we, despite the current pandemic would like it to continue to be that place for people. So since we are all staying at home or just generally are staying away from others, we want to create a new ‘virtual space’ to continue to serve the coffee and tea community. This will come in the form of weekday afternoon gatherings. A daily meeting Monday through Friday at 3pm, with a different topic of discussion every day. We will start out every meeting with a few slides introducing the subject matter including relevant data and resources to share valuable up-to-date information with the attendees. This takes place in a zoom meeting room and will be completely public for whomever wants to join us! Whether you are a business owner, a roaster, someone currently employed, laid off, or just passionate about coffee and/or tea, YOU ARE ALL WELCOME TO JOIN US!

NYC Barista Relief Fund
Effective Sunday, March 22, the "New York State on PAUSE" executive order, a 10-point policy to assure uniform safety for everyone, went into effect to combat the spread of COVID-19. It included a new directive that all non-essential businesses statewide must close in-office personnel functions, and temporarily bans all non-essential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason. The local New York City coffee shops that rely upon the incoming workforce from the tri-state area and local residents going for a walk to get a coffee and pastry are clearly impacted and could only look to close their business and hope to return soon. Many of local stores are still stocked with coffee products that are unable to be purchased in-store. In the meantime, the baristas at your local coffee shop are out of work. Many of these baristas work without traditional protections such as paid sick leave and unemployment insurance, and are at a disproportionate risk of financial hardship in the best of times. While the governments work toward securing aid, companies like Bean&Bean, Birch Coffee, The Chai Company, Oatly, Odeko and others are looking to build a New York City Barista Relief Fund to provide grants to baristas experiencing any economic hardship as a result of COVID-19. This is the mission of #NYLOVESCOFFEE. Sell the coffee products stuck inside the stores as limited edition kits to the people that want them. Then use the proceeds to fund New York City Barista Relief financial assistance program to cover essential expenses not covered by government relief programs.
