Digital Identity
Identity (Credentials/Licenses/Attestations)
The Australia Post will soon launch a new mobile digital identity platform based on blockchain technology. The digital service will allow people to verify their identity in just a few minutes via smartphone using biometric data. The technology will be robust enough to allow individuals to apply for a passport or mortgage by mobile and could become a new growth business for the national utility.
Australia Post presented a plan to the Victorian Electoral Matters Committee to use Blockchain for voting. The process was described as, "We envisage a vote being an electronic transaction whereby a number of voting 'credits' can be 'spent' by the voter to attribute preferences. Permission to vote would be secured through the use of secure digital access keys sent securely to each voter. A ballot would be cryptographically represented within the blockchain, with each vote linked to the voter thr
CSIRO’s data analysis unit, Data61 is in the process of conducting a review to examine the potential and implications of Blockchain technology for both government and industry. Potential ‘proof of concept’ projects will be evaluated in conjunction with industry experts and across government.

Long Term Scenarios and Technical Applications
Strategy/Research
Funded under the National Innovation and Science Agenda, Australia's Data61 delivered two reports that examine the risks and opportunities of blockchain technology in Australia. The first report, Distributed Ledgers: Scenarios for the Australian economy over the coming decades, explores four plausible adoption scenarios of blockchain technology in Australian in 2030. This approach includes scenarios that are aspirational and transformative, establish a new equilibrium and represent collapse. The
In April 2016, Standards Australia submitted a proposal for developing new international standards on blockchain technology and electronic distributed ledger technologies. The proposal was considered by the 161 member countries of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and approved in September.
A report titled, ‘The Land Transport Regulation 2040’, by the National Transport Commission (NTC) mentioned that Blockchain could provide a potential foundation for a fairer, more transparent, and more sustainable, transport charging and funding model, by enabling ‘stable, trusted, interoperable and secure data communications within transport, and between transport and other service providers.’
A CFR working group has considered the potential implications of DLT and how it fits within the existing regulatory framework in Australia. The Bank has established an internal working group to consider the implications of the technology.
The Company Civic Ledger has been working recently with Melbourne City Council to use blockchain to enable residents to trade surplus parking entitlements. The pilot anticipates that blockchain will enable peer-to-peer markets for customers that can legally trade council issued entitlements. By enabling customers to self-service and self-manage their transactions with council, there are wins for both customer and council including, Increased transparency for council, speed of transaction for cus
The University of Melbourne will soon test blockchain technology to record student credentials, allowing people to share verified copies of their qualifications with employers and other third parties in a tamper-proof system. The university is among the earliest in the world to pilot the technology, which will be used this year in an internal course, the Melbourne Teaching Certificate, taken by its academics to improve their teaching skills. On the weekend of May 12–14, government representatives in the energy sector and banking executives in the financial services industry came together to judge RegHack DownUnder. The brightest developers, UI/UX designers and entrepreneurs across Australia were encouraged to spend the weekend in Melbourne to develop blockchain technology solutions to solve some of the problems it faces in these two heavily regulated sectors.

The Central Bank of Barbados studied the effect of adding cryptocurrency to its portfolio of reserve currencies. Reserve banks keep significant amounts of other countries’ currencies on hand in order to help manage the exchange rate of their own. The central bank assessed whether bitcoin might be significant enough to give the bank a new means of maintaining its dollar’s peg to the U.S. dollar.

Public Transportation
T-Mining is currently working on a pilot project that will make container handling in the port of Antwerp more efficient and secure. Using blockchain technology, processes that involve several parties – carriers, terminals, forwarders, hauliers, drivers, shippers etc. – are securely digitised without any central middleman being involved.
Just getting a container from point A to point B frequently involves more than 30 different parties, with an average of 200 interactions between them. Given th
Brazilian regions Pelotas and Morro Redondo have commenced a blockchain-based pilot, adding public property record data for the two regions. Initially, a parallel platform will be built to replicate the existing legal structure of property ownership recording and transferring.
