All the food is made from what they grow on their farm, you can eat well for 8-15€. Pizzas, soups, salads, quiches, baked goods, and misc. plats du jour. Not much room to sit, so plan someplace to go and enjoy your meal. Got a lot of take-out from here when I worked at Meero.

Sichuan-style spicy beef noodle soup. Actually extremely spicy! They let you choose from spice level 0-5 and I—an extremely hardy and spice-tolerant person—usually tap out at 3 (4 if I'm sick). Most French people choose 0 or 1. Highlights: fish or beef in "court bouillon et piment," dan dan noodles, dumplings, and garlic broccoli. Takes reservations (recommended) and relatively inexpensive. Some places are cash only.

I know I said never eat Mexican food in France and, to be honest, if you’re from California or anywhere in the south with good Mexican food, this will disappoint. A self-described “chef incubator” restaurant; “welcoming young chefs to take over the kitchen in order to find and refine their identity, test their ideas, and learn how to manage a team.” Obviously some nights are better than others, but it’s a really cool place in a really cool neighborhood. A beautiful Belle Epoque style dining room, worth stopping in for the decor and old-fashioned charm alone. I am biased, because it was my great-aunt’s favorite place. But if you want to time travel for a little bit, it can be great to do it here. I recommend trying something off their wine list and starters (especially the foie gras) but I wouldn’t necessarily stay for a main course, since the ambiance is the best part.

Truly one of my favorite places in the entire world. Lines can be long, though--if you aren’t an art lover who will spend at least three hours there, it’s probably not gonna be worth it if you can’t skip the line. Be sure to visit the two courtyards filled with French sculpture; on a nice day, they’re sunny and you can sit and soak in the atmosphere. UPDATE: Since COVID you need to book a ticket online ahead of time with a time slot, even members, so plan your visit more than the night before

!CLOSED 2025-2030! Most modern art is the opposite of “my thing,” but this (hideous and iconic) building houses the modern art museum in Paris and it’s worth a walk-by at least. Plus they have some very good art deco furniture and a few other quirky things in their permanent collection.

If you are even a LITTLE bit goth, this is a must-see. Bones on bones on bones on bones on bones, memento mori in the most intense and yet strangely soothing way imaginable. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. One of the world’s most spooky and beautiful ossuaries; most of the bones were moved and laid to rest here during the 1700s. Dope as hell. Order your tickets online ahead of time to guarantee your time slot, it’s exploded in popularity since I was a student.

You don’t actually have to go inside, in my opinion, although it is of course quite impressive and gothic inside and the rose window is lovely; be careful of pickpockets in the square out front. I also recommend visiting the archaeological crypt if you’re into medieval and early Christian history. UPDATE: After the fire in 2019, the reconstruction efforts were mostly finished for the 2024 Olympics. Things look a BIT different now, and it's even touristier than before if possible, but it's still

A beautiful church just around the corner from the Pantheon; inside are the relics of Saint Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris (the subject of my senior paper). It’s worth a pop inside for the fantastic carved staircases, and the only surviving rood screen in Paris. Also the outside of this building was featured in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. If you go here with me I will tell you the extremely long story of Saint Geneviève and her cult’s political history in Paris.

An impressive neoclassical edifice on an axis with Place de la Concorde and the Assemblée Nationale. Napoleon had this church built as a sort of shrine to the glory of his army. I love it because it’s SO NAPOLEON. (There’s a painting above the altar where he is depicted directly above Jesus, in what is the most unsubtle and Napoleonic gesture of all time.) Enjoy climbing six thousand steps to get there (at least it's close to my apartment). You can climb another six thousand billion steps once inside to see the incredible view of Paris from the top of the dome. Especially remarkable at sunset. There’s also a nearby fountain that Saint Denis supposedly washed his head in as he carried it down the mountain, and on the North side of the church there's a small but cute park that not many tourists make it around to so it's typically nice and calm.

This chapel was built by Saint Louis to house the crown of thorns, which he is supposed to have brought back from Jerusalem. (The crown is no longer there; the place was sacked during the Revolution.) Each stained glass window represents a book of the New or Old Testament or a saint’s life, and the whole room is one big jewel box.

The Romans built a full-size coliseum in Lutetia (now Paris); today all that remains is this small soccer/pétanque park but you can visualize it pretty well. Victor Hugo threw a giant fit when the city was about to tear this down and saved it, for which I am eternally grateful because it gives you a lot of scope to think about what a palimpsest of a city Paris is.

Day / Overnight Trips
The capital of the Champagne region, with the bonus of having one of the most perfect Gothic cathedrals in all of France (incl. stained glass windows by Chagall) and all only about an hour and a half by train outside Paris. A great day trip, but book all your champagne house tours well in advance.

A beautiful castle, although it's a bit annoying to get there (bus from the train stop in Maudin). In summertime, they have a bus directly from Paris, and they light the entire grounds up with candles at night, and you can wander around as well as order dining and drinks among the illuminated grounds.

Haven't Been In A While
Day / Overnight Trips
Fairly easy to access via the RER A. You can make a day trip of it, or stay at a hotel on-property to enjoy some after-hours perks. If you're a Disney fan, and visiting for at least a week or two, it's worth a visit now that they have multiple parks... but prices are steep!
