Navigating public health careers in non-profits, government, academia, and moreLaura-Nicole Sisson will be joining us via Zoom to talk about the range of careers open to folks interested in pursuing public health. She is currently completing a NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowship (Drug Dependency Epidemiology) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her current research focuses on the evaluation of innovative harm reduction programming throughout the state of Maryland, including drug checking, wound care, and post-overdose outreach. This work is informed by nearly 10 years of direct practice in Vermont developing and implementing housing and community-based mental health programming for individuals with histories of chronic housing instability, incarceration, and psychiatric hospitalization. Gail Chorney, MD (SC '74): Dinner with studentsGail Chorney, MD graduated from Smith College in 1974 with a major in Biological Sciences (Zoology). She attended Boston University School of Medicine and completed her residency in pediatric orthopedic surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine. For the past 30 years, she has worked at the NYU School of Medicine in various roles as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and in multiple administrative leadership roles at NYU Langone Medical Center. She is currently the Executive Director of the NYU Orthopedic Center, in addition to being the Executive Director of the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, Orthopedic Center for Occupational Injuries and the hospital’s associated clinics. Working both at the NYU School of Medicine and the hospital has given her a unique view of the delivery of medicine and the myriad career paths within the healthcare industry. She looks forward to sharing her story and perspectives with students. The Health Professions Advising program will host Dr. Chorney and a group of students for dinner and conversation at a local Northampton restaurant. There is no cost to students to attend. Space is limited to the first 8 students who register in Handshake. Participants will be notified of the venue closer to the event date. Friday Lunchbag: MD PhD Info Session with the University of Connecticut School of MedicineIn this session, students will learn about the MD PhD program application process and the wide variety of careers available for MD PhD physician-scientists. The presenters are Dr. Kimberly Dodge-Kafka and Sara Halili '22 from the UConn School of Medicine and Health Science Center. Dr. Dodge-Kafka is a Professor of Cell Biology in the Center for Cardiology. She is currently the Director of the MD/PhD program at UCHC and the Assistant Dean of Research Planning and Coordination. Dr. Dodge-Kafka’s work focuses on the signaling pathways that mediate cardiac disease. Sara Halili graduated from Smith College in 2022 with a BA in Biochemistry. During her four years at Smith, she conducted research in Dr. Steven Williams' laboratory, which culminated with completion of an honors thesis on development of molecular diagnostic assays for Schistosoma parasites. Now a third-year MD-PhD student, Sara is pursuing her PhD in Cell Biology, studying the molecular genetics of parathyroid tumors. She plans to pursue a career in academic medicine, combining research with patient care. Pizza will be served at the event.
