Valeria is a member of the class of 2026 and is triple majoring in an effort to grasp a clear understanding of the climate crisis from a sociological, scientific, and answer-ridden way! She wishes to pursue Environmental Law and help shed light on marginalized communities like hers, Laredo, Texas. She works in the office of admissions for Maxwell and A&S as well as two Research Assistantships with La Casita and The Engaged Humanities Department! She also is heavily engaged with student involvement on-campus as it serves as a balance to her academic life- she serves as philanthropy chair for MEXSA, she’s in the Legal and Fiscal teams for Moody Magazine, she’s part of the crochet club, and is extremely proud to have established Latine Honors Society with some of the brightest and most creative minds on campus! She’s also a huge fan of hammocking! Catch her outside of HOL on beautiful days!
Evelina Torres is a junior studying political science and citizenship & civic engagement. She grew up in Houston, TX, where she has developed a passion for urban planning as it relates to racial and climate justice. Academically, she works on research with the Young Research Fellows program and is a research assistant in the Political Science Department. They hope to focus their political science distinction thesis on transportation policy and their CCE capstone on access to public health/policymakers.
On campus, she is involved with Dimensions, a mentorship group for women of color, and with La Casita, a Latino cultural center. Over Summer 2023, she designed and facilitated a program teaching kids about the environment, climate change, and things we all can do to be smart climate citizens. Both of these organizations she is most involved with focus on making community in different ways, and that is another reason why Latine Honors Society is very important to them. They are very excited to help LHS grow and help make a space for Latine Honors students to find community with each other.
Outside of school and in her free time, she likes to play the piano, watch movies, and crochet. Her most successful crochet project so far has been a bag/purse, and it is currently holding her works in progress.
