The curriculum is for a group of 13- to 15-year-olds who are grieving from the loss of a peer or friend.
The specifics of the group are that it is open to males and females that have experienced the death of a friend or peer of any age. The program will include a total of 6 sessions lasting 90 minutes and will be held in a location like the Hattiesburg YMCA on Saturdays at 10 a.m.; registration will be on the YMCA website.
There will be multiple groups running at this time, and each group will be a closed group with the maximum group number of 10. This will be a year-round group that will begin again after the final session with a new set of members. However, this is subject to change depending on needs and interest level.
The lessons will include topics such as understanding grief and related emotions, coping strategies, importance of remembering and saying good-bye, self-empowerment, and how to move forward. Each lesson builds and relates to the previous lesson.
These lessons are designed to equip the adolescents with coping skills and strategies to walk through the difficult emotions related to grief. Each lesson will include activities and reflection prompts that are designed to bring out self- reflection and processing.
The group will also create a sense of support, openness, respect, and confidentiality to allow the members feel comfortable to share the things they are experiencing. The overall goal of the group is to is to be a supportive tool that the members can use during this unfortunate time. The group will help them feel validated and come away from this project with the necessary skills to experience grief.
Recruitments will include ads in newspapers, fliers in schools and around the community, word of mouth, and on the YMCA website. The cost of the group will be minimal, but funding will rely on donations from the community and federal grants.
It will also rely on volunteers to help facilitate these groups. We believe that this group will be beneficial to the members and the community of Hattiesburg.
