Summary
The purpose of this grief focus group is to help children, ages 9 to 11 years old, identify various ways to cope with their grief after experiencing the loss of a loved one (e.g., parent, sibling, or other family member).
This focus group will take place over the course of a 6-week period, which will include an introduction session, four subsequent sessions with lesson plans and activities, as well as a termination session.
The Introduction session will provide group members with an overview of what the group experience will entail, along with activities for group members to build rapport with one another.
In Session Two, group members will identify and learn to process the feelings that they keep bottled up to themselves and perhaps do not know how to express to anyone else.
The group members will learn that it is perfectly okay to feel angry and that this is not an emotion that should create guilt or cause hiding. Group members will also learn that anger is a natural feeling and that they can express themselves in a healthy manner.
Following this lesson and activity is Session Three, which is where group members will focus on happy memories associated with their loved one, as well as thoughts that make them feel happy. This session will allow for members to express themselves through art by writing and drawing special memories and positive thoughts on a pillow case, which is also designed to serve as a safe and peaceful place for them after they have had a sad day.
In Session Four, group members will learn how to process the variety of emotions they feel as a result of their loved one’s death. These feelings may range from cheerful to sorrowful. Group members will learn that these feelings are “normal” and that it is good for them to be able to express any of these emotions in a healthy way.
Additionally, Session Five will be geared towards the memories that the children have made with their loved one. They will memorialize their loved one by making a special box to serve as a sacred place for them to keep these special memories. The children will also have the opportunity to share and cherish their memories with the group members, if they so wish.
Finally, the group members will complete the Termination session. During this session, group members will have the opportunity to discuss and process what they have learned throughout the focus group sessions and activities.
