The author does not directly mention Russia, but it is implied that Russia is the common element that allows him to understand what Ukrainians may be going through and that what makes him able to understand is something really hard to deal with. Russia is a common element because it is an invasive force in Ukraine and a major ally and supporter of authoritarianism worldwide (therefore, the mention of Iran).
The consequences of Venezuelan presidents Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro's brand of authoritarianism in the lives of Venezuelans are the worst humanitarian crisis recorded in the history of Latin America (as described by numerous international and multilateral organizations), with more than 90% of the people living under the poverty line, the destruction of the health system, basic infrastructure in demise, chronic shortages of basic staples (or only available to a few), chronic malnutrition, and the migration of around 30% of the population.
To what is mentioned above, one should add a lack of freedoms, grave human rights violations, and an open ICC investigation due to alleged crimes against humanity.
Starting on September 2022, the Mahsa Amini protests in Iran constituted the latest, and by some accounts, largest, protest wave in the country since the 2009 election protests. Initially protesting the police brutality that led to the death of a young woman of Kurdish origin, the protest wave expressed demands to end mandatory hijab for women and resulted in massive anti-regime sentiment, including expressions against Iran's military adventurism abroad. This includes supplying Russia with drones used to attack Ukrainian cities.
Only one comment: "absolutely".
